Range...?

What is your opinion on determining range in a poker game. I have noticed that some of the better poker players I encounter are always talking about their range versus another players range. I figure this must be terminology coming from a poker tutorial or poker strategy book, but I haven't read any. I have always just relied on player tendencies and betting patterns, but after watching a couple tournament leaders play I'm starting to believe in range even though i don't fully understand it. If anyone out their does, please fill me in and I would also like to know if you think it works. Thanks alot mastering holdem groupies!

i'm pretty sure that they are just guessing about what they villian has by past hand historys or by betting patterns..i seem to guess to weak all the time as they usually have a btter hand than lol
