General Texas Hold'em Strategy

I have seen this expression in a lot of poker articles and forum posts. What are two active cards as compared to one active card or any two cards?
Another one. I played stud for years and we always called 3 of a kind, well, trips or 3 of a kind. I heard the word -set- used as well. I have been told that trips and set differ. Is there actually a difference?

I wonder if the phrase two "active" cards refers to having two "live" cards. If you hold KJ vs AQ and you're all-in, then both cards are live and pairing either may give you the best hand. If you have AQ vs AK, then only your Q is live and you're in much worse shape because pairing your ace still gives your opponent a better hand due to your kickers.
As for the difference between a set and trips. Having trips means one of your two hole cards matches a pair showing on the board to give you your three of a kind. So if you have T9 and the board reads TT5, then you have trip tens. Now a set refers to holding a pocket pair that makes three of a kind on the board. So if you had TT and the flop was TK7, then you have a set of tens. Obviously sets are disguised better and are easier to get paid big for.
